Expo West Report: Industrial Hemp Market Expansion Continues

Hemp is no longer a controlled substance. Previously hemp, even industrial hemp, was considered a Schedule I controlled substance by the federal government. However, with the passing of the new Agriculture Improvement Act on December 20, 2018 (nicknamed the ‘2018 Farm Bill’), cultivating the plant is no longer prohibited.

Since 1972, the Controlled Substances Act had classified hemp and hemp-derived CBD as controlled substances. The 2018 Farm Bill changed this completely, decriminalizing these things (1). Although regulations vary from state to state, this landmark decision has opened up an entirely new sector for agriculture. A Nicotinamide Riboside Supplement May Help Heart Function

Why NAD+ is Important

Even though scientists have known about NAD+ for over a century, its importance has only recently come to light. Without NAD+ the human body cannot properly generate energy from food. Other studies point to NR’s heart-specific benefits. Last month, ChromaDex Corp. reported on a preclinical study done on mice which shows that NR supplementation helps maintain their heart function. NR does this by stimulating ‘the mitochondrial unfolded protein response’ (UPRmt).

This response (UPRmt) is the mechanism that helps mitochondria to function properly. The results of this independent study (led by Principal Investigators Prof. Ajay M. Shah and Dr. Ioannis Smyrnias from Kings College London) have been published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) (5).

Specific to heart function, preliminary studies like the one above show that NR supplementation could help treat a range of age-related cardiac conditions, including heart failure. According to a 2018 research article published in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation,

Myocardial metabolic impairment is a major feature in chronic heart failure. As the major coenzyme in fuel oxidation and oxidative phosphorylation and a substrate for enzymes signaling energy stress and oxidative stress response, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is emerging as a metabolic target in a number of diseases including heart failure (6).

Furthermore, the Circulation article lists some important clinical implications of a diet that includes NR supplementation (6):

  • Could possibly help patients who have experienced heart failure to improve their myocardial ATP supply by improving NAD+ levels.

More Consumers Turning to CBD and Collagen Supplements

People of all ages take all sorts of nutritional supplements for numerous reasons. Some people take them to support their overall health which others take them to improve athletic performance. What’s more, other people take supplements for age-related issues or health conditions. Pregnant and nursing women often take supplements as well.

Recently, ConsumerLab.com completed its annual survey of its e-newsletter subscribers. The survey questions subscribers regarding their use of nutritional supplements. Conducted since 2002, the survey asks which specific products (dietary supplements, nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts, etc.) the subscribers use.

Between November and December 2018, almost 11,000 people responded to the survey. Each person rated a wide range of popular merchants and brands (each has received a minimum of 90 consumer ratings). The results? Consumer Lab’s 2019 160-page report lists the products receiving the highest consumer satisfaction rating in specific market segments (1).

Changes From Previous Surveys

While many respondents report using certain products less than the previous year, two products stood out in particular for their increased usage. Both CBD and collagen supplements gained ground among subscribers over previous years’ surveys.

Specifically, CBD oil and hemp extracts showed a 6.3% increase from 5.6% of respondents in 2017 to 11.9% in 2018. This is a 113% increase, moving CBD from 84th place on Consumer Lab’s most popular supplement to 40th place. This is astounding considering that CBD products aren’t as widely available as many other supplements and herbal products.

The second largest increase in usage among survey respondents was collagen. Specifically, collagen use rose 3.6% from the 2018 report. In addition, bone broth experience the third greatest increase, up 2.7% from the previous survey. At the same time, Consumer Lab’s subscribers report using less of several supplements than they did before. Some nutritional supplements and products that subscribers use less of are CoQ10, probiotics, coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar (2).

Also, the 2019 report reveals that Vitamin D remains the top supplement (used by 66.4% of respondents). CoQ10 dropped to 4th place allowing Magnesium to become the third most popular dietary supplement. And although fish oil experienced a slight drop from the 2018 report, it remains one of the most commonly used supplements. Some of the other most popular supplements among survey respondents are multivitamins, probiotics, curcumin, turmeric, vitamin C, B complexes, and calcium (2).

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a chemical compound derived from Cannabis sativa. However, unlike marijuana, CBD has no psychoactive effects. It is found in both cannabis plants and industrial hemp. In late 2018, the Agricultural Improvement Act stated that industrial hemp cannot have more than 0.3% THC, the euphoria-inducing ingredient found in marijuana (3).

Although CBD oil is one of the most common forms, you can also find it in gummies, tinctures, patches, and even vapes (3). One study used rabbits to examine the effects of capsaicin on body weight. The rabbits were given one of two diets — either a high-fat diet (the control) or high-fat diet with 1% hot pepper. In this study, 91 moderately overweight participants were placed on a four-week VLED regime (very-low-energy diet) followed by a three-month weight-maintenance period. Moreover, during this weight maintenance phase, participants were either given a capsaicin supplement or a placebo. In the end, the capsaicin group experienced more fat oxidation than the placebo group (6).
